Have you ever dreamed that you lost your purse or wallet? Or perhaps it was stolen, or you can’t find it no matter how many places you look? Many of us have had this dream, but what does it mean?
Purses and wallets are similar holders for a variety of things that are very precious to us. The main things that both men and women use them to carry are money, identification, and credit cards. So, why would we dream about a driver’s license and some plastic or cash? When working with dreams it is very important to get past the apparent literal meaning and look at the symbolic level. One thing these items have in common is that they are all considered very valuable. Even though a license or school I.D. card may seem as trivial as a little piece of plastic with a bunch of numbers and our photo on it, the word ‘identification’ has the same root word as ‘identity’ as in, “Who am I, and what is my purpose, my role in life, my identity?” So, if you are following and can look at this as a metaphor, when we lose our ‘identity’ - as in driver’s license or other form of I.D. - in a dream, on a spiritual level we may actually be experiencing a sense of loss of personal identity.
Life gives us many roles to play, and most of us will face more than one transition or change of roles throughout the life cycle. A young adult may identify as single and yet no matter how much they want to get married, when they finally do they often experience a loss of their identity as a single person. The same is true when we are faced with the loss of a partner whether through divorce, death, or breakup. Our identity shifts from being part of a couple unit to once again being independent. Dreams of losing our I.D. usually happen when we lose a role, so the loss of a job or retirement can also be strong triggers for this dream. Sometimes we give up our own identity for the sake of trying to please another, which is a form of giving our power away and not a good recipe for a healthy relationship. Such a dream could be an indication that it is time to take your power back.
What about money? Words like worth and value come to mind. Looking beyond the physical realm, if we lose our money in a dream it could be a symbol for loss of self-worth or self-value. That said, dreams can sometimes be literal, so if an actual financial loss is a concern this is important to address - while at the same time looking at the dreamer’s personal sense of worthiness to see if this is also relevant.
And finally, credit cards. Are you giving yourself enough credit for your accomplishments? Is someone else taking credit for your work or creative ideas? Dreams love puns and plays on words, yet the meaning is really the same. Tthe more credit a bank gives us, the more financial ‘worth’ we hold, in their eyes, at least. So too, if you are dreaming of losing a credit card, ask yourself if someone is not valuing you enough – including yourself.
Our dreaming mind loves us and holds us in the highest sense of worth and value. It knows our true identity, and when we get off track it will always give us messages to bring us back in alignment with our true self and our purpose. Losing keys means so much – it’s like being called to stop, slow down and assess whether you are headed in the right direction, or opening the right doors. Often times we get lost in busy and mindlessly head off on our path not aware of the other options or deeper intuitive callings that may lead us elsewhere.

I had a dream about leaving my handbag on a bus with all my important identification and credit cards and keys.I am thinking perhaps it has to do with the recent loss of my husband and trying to find my way after such a loss.

I had a dream last night where I lost my identity (I kept saying that in my dream). I opened my purse to find my sunglasses and wallet were both gone. I realized I had left them at home, but I needed to confirm my identity to travel somewhere and I was freaked out. I finally thought to use my Facebook page and company ID badge. (HA!) Thank you for this interpretation because this one sentence (Such a dream could be an indication that it is time to take your power back.) was just what I needed to hear today!

Thank you for the insight! I had 2 dreams of not being able to find my pocketbook. The first time I found it & was elated but the second time I couldn’t even after searching through a garbage can. But found other items that belong to me that I had already gotten rid of. How’re, for some reason I wasn’t worried about not finding it. Oddly enough, I even told someone that I felt a sense of relief.
