What for?

September 04, 2026

Have you ever been lying in bed and wondered, "What is this all for? There just HAS to be more to life than this!" If yes, or if you've wondered something similar, then you are certainly not alone. Sometimes it feels like the body clock is ticking, day after day, without any real meaning or direction. Yes, of course, there are moments that are memorable. You might even think, "Perhaps these are the moments I live for." Yet deep inside, you just know there is something more. Something beautiful. Expansive. Even...glorious.

When I was a boy, it was thrilling whenever I had the chance to go on a merry-go-round. I would run up, find the coolest-looking horse, and hop on. With excitement, the ride would start with a jingle, and I would go up and down and round and round.

Similarly, throughout our lives, we have our ups, and in those moments, life seems awesome. Yet, as we all know, waves always have their troughs. Sometimes our troughs in life feel like they are going to last f-o-r-e-v-e-r. Most people do their best to ride the waves of life at their highest peaks and try to avoid the inevitable times when the waves come down.

Yet beyond the rise and fall of the waves, in the depths of the ocean, there exists only vast stillness. This vast stillness exists inside each one of us as well, extending far beyond any outward circumstance. This stillness is an intrinsic part of our being. It is who we are, yet most people are not consciously aware of it.

Through meditation and spiritual living, we begin to experience this reality that is natural to our being. In just about every spiritual tradition, there exists some form of the term "enlightenment." Some call it nirvana, others moksha, mukti, liberation, or awakening. No matter how you slice it, our journey is one of becoming free from identification with the dualities of creation.

When we begin to tune into this deeper reality of our being, life becomes dramatically more meaningful. Eventually, we reach the point where, no matter what happens outwardly, we realize that this stillness within is far more wonderful than words can possibly express.
