Authentic Sourcing

Suren Srestha

Most of the instruments at East West Books and Gifts come from Suren Srestha, author of How to Heal With Singing Bowls, and founder of Atma Buti Sound and Vibrational School.

Suren grew up in Nepal, about 45 minutes from Mount Everest.  His Tibetan Singing Bowls are hand hammered in his native village, and a portion of his company's profits go to a charitable work he has set up for children of that village

Once a year, Suren comes in person to East West Books and Gifts to teach students how to heal with singing bowls. In October 2026, Suren will be offering Level 1 and Level 2 teacher training, and will be offering a group healing session as well.
Healing and Relaxation

Sound Baths at East West Books and Gifts

Sound Baths and Healings are the most popular event types offered at East West Books and Gifts.  In addition to Suren's annual visit, we have many sound healers who regularly offer group healings at East West.  These healers and musicians offer Kirtans, Gong Sound Baths, Singing Bowl Sound Baths, and healing with Drums.
Hand Hammered in Nepal

Tibetan Singing Bowls

The most popular and sacred instrument offered at East West are the Tibetan Singing Bowls, which are hand hammered in Nepal.  The bowls are each associated with a note, and each note is associated with a chakra or energy center in the body. The bowls can be struck like a bell, or they can be rubbed so that they 'sing'. When played, the bowls have a cleansing effect. Suren teaches a whole set of healing methods, but one popular method is to fill the bowl with warm water, place it on the body, and then play it. The water will vibrate in a pattern within the bowl, and because the human body is made of water, we can see that our own bodies are vibrating with this pattern.
Modern Innovation

Crystal Singing Bowls

A modern take on the original metal bowls, Crystal Singing Bowls tend to have a much clearer, louder sound and can easily fill a whole room.

The crystal bowls are played the same was the metal Tibetan Singing Bowls, and can be used in sound baths, chakra or physical healing, or energy transmission.  Because the bowls resonate for so long after playing, they are also great for meditation.
